SCOPE OF APPLICATION
Ethanol is used extensively as a solvent in the manufacture of varnishes and perfumes, as a preservative for biological specimens; in the preparation of essences and flavorings; in many medicines and drugs; as a disinfectant and in tinctures and as fuel.
WHY IS ETHANOL USED AS A DISINFECTANT?
Ethanol is used in medical wipes and most commonly in antibacterial hand sanitizer gels as an antiseptic for its bactericidal and anti-fungal effects. Ethanol kills organisms by denaturing their proteins and dissolving their lipids and is effective against most bacteria and fungi, and many viruses. 70% ethanol is the most effective concentration, particularly because of osmotic pressure. Ethanol can also be used as a disinfectant and antiseptic because it causes cell dehydration. Ethanol shows excellent immediate effect and is effective against viruses within hygienic hand disinfection. It has a very good skin compatibility.
ETHANOL IN PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS
Ethanol is found as an active ingredient in oral, parenteral, and topical (including inhalational) prescription and nonprescription drug products. Although it is primarily used because of its solvent properties to help solubilize many drugs, it also possesses several concentration-dependent pharmacological actions, including sedative, carminative, cooling, antipyretic, rubefacient, cleansing, and antiseptic properties.
ETHANOL AS AN ANTIDOTE TO METHANOL POISONIG
Methanol poisoning most commonly occurs following the drinking of products containing methanol. Toxicity may also rarely occur through extensive skin exposure or breathing in fumes. When methanol is broken down by the body it results in formaldehyde and formic acid. Ethanol reduce the action of alcohol dehydrogenase on methanol by means of competition inhibition. It acts as a competitive inhibitor by more effectively binding and saturating the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme in the liver, thus blocking the binding of methanol. Methanol is excreted by the kidney without being converted into the very toxic metabolites formaldehyde and formic acid.

Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from various plant materials collectively known as biomass. Compared with conventional unleaded gasoline, ethanol is a particulate-free burning fuel source that combusts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water and aldehydes.
