When You Need Chromating (or an Alternative) After Rust Removal

Rust Removal Alone Is Not Enough If:

  • You want to prevent flash rust (rust forming again within hours or days)

  • The part will be stored or painted later

  • The metal is iron/steel and will be exposed to moisture or air

Why?

Rust Removers remove rust effectively — but they also:

  • Strip the protective oxide layer

  • Leave a clean but highly reactive surface

  • So, flash rusting occurs quickly, especially in humid air

What Chromating Does

  • Forms a passive, corrosion-resistant layer

  • Especially used on aluminum, zinc, and steel

  • Helps in paint adhesion and long-term protection

But: Chromates (especially hexavalent chromium) are toxicregulated, and being phased out globally.

Recommended Approach (If NOT Using Chromate):

After Rust Removal:

  1. Neutralize surface
→ Use mild alkaline rinse RXSOL Alkaline Cleaner

  2. Apply temporary corrosion inhibitor
    → Use something like:

  3. OR Apply Primer/Paint Immediately
→ Especially after phosphoric acid treatment (etches + preps)
