Ethyl iodide is prepared by using red phosphorus, absolute ethanol and iodine. the iodine dissolve in the ethanol where it react with the solid phosphorus to form phosphorus triiodide, which must be formed in situ because it is unstable. During the process the temperature is controlled.
Application::
- Ethyl iodide, clear liquid; boiling at 72.3 C is used as an ethylating agent in organic synthesis for many application, for example, as solvents, intermediates for numerous chemicals, dyes, fumigants, sterilants, X-ray contrast media, antiseptics and pharmaceuticals.

Note::
- A funnel of this volume and shape is not essential but has been found convenient. Even if a globular separatory funnel is used, the liquid flowing through it has been found to wet the walls.
- For larger quantities a flask up to 12 l. in capacity may be substituted.
- The stopcock from a small, broken, separatory funnel serves the purpose.
